Seeing how half empty this world is, maybe escaping this god-awful reality isn't so bad after all.

I really respect John K. Ren and Stimpy was absolutely pivotal for for the Western cartoon industry, not only for raising the bar when it came to animation techniques, but for opening the door to creator made cartoons- South park, Arrrrgh! It's the Mr. hell Show!, Drawn together etc. (love them or hate them, they are better by far then the half hour glorified toy commercials of the '80's)
And I do Love the John K era of Ren and Stimpy, I was even part of the first audience in the world to see his Adult Party Cartoons.
His blog is beautifully cynical, and his views on animation are often facinating...
But Ren and Stimpy was his FIRST CARTOON. Look back at your own first painting, drawing, comic... Do YOU like it? It was good, but I do enjoy other cartoons.
And it's HIS style. Not yours. he worked through the artistic processes to get there, it's his signature, his familiar. GET. YOUR. OWN. He doesn't know everything there is to know about everything. '
I teach kids character design and I get SO annoyed with the copied styles I see... anime, manga, powerepuff girls... it's an uphill battle a lot of the time to teach them that they have to develop their own...
Ha! I like all but the Mr Hell show was kind of unbearable due to the lazy flash animation.. The pilot was amazing though.
You know what - I haven't even watched the whole Adult Party Cartoons, just snippets. Tbh, I just prefer to watch series 2-3 instead. Not that I have a problem with the vulgarity but the drawings aren't as good to me. They were fantastic back then, and even when they were poorly translated by an inbetweener or whatever - it was funny. Now it's just ugly and the animation is digitalized. And yes, Ren and Stimpy was his first cartoon he directed and created, but the stuff her worked on before that was pretty similar in style - New Adventures of Mighty Mouse for example. I think Ren and Stimpy was kind of made in his prime - I don't think he's really improved as a cartoonist since then. So I kind of disagree that it was like his first painting. He had a LOT of warm ups.
But yeah I agree with your point about it being HIS style. When people kept looking at my art and saying it looked like Ren and Stimpy, or even people who seemed less involved and knowledgeable about cartoons asked if I knew ABOUT Ren and Stimpy, I started to sort of worry where the direction of my style was going. Other people, seem to be honored or enjoy when this happens. Whether they're talking about Craig McCracken's style or some random anime, and I can't fathom why, but they don't seem phased. Influence can be a good thing, yes, but only being able to draw in one style - especially if it isn't your own - is a very very very bad thing.
Sometimes inspiration and flat out plagarism are apparently easily confused...
I managed to get around the abominable Flash animation on Mr. Hell, though I can also stomatch fairly abominable anime too, if the plot/characters interesting- characters are more my speciality then any other area.
I attened a John K. retrospective as part of the Melbourne International Animation Festival. He really was the very first animator-creator that made me love and respect the artform and the people behind so it was a no brainer that I had to go ^^. They premiered the Alturists and naked Beach Frenzy there- the uncut versions. Though admittedly I've had no inclination to hunt down the DVD after.
I actually couldn't think of a good simile for the example ^^ I think its closer to say "look at an early exhibition" but I get the feeling not too many DAers have HAD exhibitions... (God, I sound like such bitchy elitist saying that!)
People thought your stuff looked like Ren and Stimpy? I can see a tiny tiny hint, but I also see traditional, I see Robert Crumb, Hell, I can even see Chuck Jones... were the people comaring you BLIND?
I get compared to anime. It gets my back up something feirce. "Ooh, big eyes? Not a) Directly Western b) Disneyesque.... Must be ANIME!" No, I actually hated anime for a long time- and that long time included the time my signature style cemented. I think it's more accurate to say it evolved along similar lines as anime- and still, to me, doesn't look like it at all.
I get perticually techy with people who can only do their one, copied style and aspire to be animators or comic book artists and STILL doesn't get why they need c-razy things like life drawing, still life drawing, character design sheets and other madness. My ruddy class is full of them.
